Mainlander: “So how much does it cost to get Taiwanese citizenship?”
Me: “What?!” (I have no fucking idea, I have never, ever paid attention to any of this)
Mum: “You can’t buy Taiwanese citizenship.”
Mainlander & Me both: “What?!?!”
Mum: “You can’t buy Taiwanese citizenship! You can apply for Permanent Residency, but you can’t be a citizen unless you’re a descendent.”
Both: “WHAT?!?!?!!?!?”
Mum: (Very matter-of-factly) “There’s no options for any foreigners to become Taiwanese. You have to have been born from a Taiwanese lineage to be Taiwanese. Including Indigenous Taiwanese.”
Mainlander: “That sounds… like… Nazi… Germany?!”
Me & Mum: “Does it?!”
Mum: “No, it’s not Nazi Germany. We are allowed multiple citizenships, unlike other countries that expect 100% loyalty. We never have to give up being Taiwanese, but we can add on. British passport, Australian passport, American passport, etc.”
Mainlander: “Because IT’S NOT A REAL COUNTRY!”
(Eye-rolling)
…
By the way, I haven’t googled any of this at the time of writing.
This is fictional storytelling.
