I’m not very good with money. I mean, I haven’t been, very good with money. I think I am getting better with it… but… I’m not very proud of my past spending habits.

That’s okay. Now I have lots of it.

But that doesn’t make me feel reassured about it at all. Having lots of it means that there’s more to lose… if anyone was going to act really, really sinister towards you…

It’s okay, I’ve also been without it.

Have you? You rarely told me about that part of your life.

Trust me, I know what it’s like to live without money. I’m glad I have it, now… but I could always go back. In fact, I look forward to it! I wish I could give it ALL away. It is a burden. You’re right. You warned me. It’s a very heavy burden. Lots of checks and balances. It’s a nightmare.

I don’t know… My Dad wasn’t retired yet when we met. Things are very different now. I have to think about… where am I going to live? In the future — if I stay single, forever. I have to think about, setting aside money, for my own retirement. If I never get married, or have kids, have anyone else to depend on — What am I doing with my life?

(Nodding) (Smiling)

(Laughing) Okay, what do you need for reassurance? Where do you want to live? Tell me about that.

What does that have to do with money?!

I want to know, now. Since we’re talking about money. Where would you like to live together? When I’m over there? A house? An apartment? Brisbane? Gold Coast? Where?

(Side-eye) This isn’t the direction I was going with, with this conversation… but… okay, I want to live in an apartment. I want it to be close to my parents…

(SIGH) So I want to live near my parents. It doesn’t have to be on the same street like in “Everybody Loves Raymond,” but yes, a 30 minutes radius sounds reasonable. It sounds like a good idea.

Because you’ll always want to be able to drive over, in case of any emergencies.

(Taken aback) But… I don’t want to live like that. I don’t want to have to rely on 24-hour security surveillance.

A gated community, sort of place. That there is security, but also — a bit of freedom, on the other side of the gates.

Okay. We can find a gated community. Which one? There’s more than one near your parents’ place within that 30 minutes radius.

(Laughing) I think you’ll like it. You’ll feel comfortable. Yes, there are more than a few apartment buildings there. And one of them — a lot more affordable — was one that “I” was planning to go to, like that was my goal — if I was just single and living my life. Just seeing myself there… but if I’m with you… and you can afford a more “luxurious” kind of place… then the OTHER building. The one with tinted windows. And the expensive body corporate that comes with tighter security. Yes, that one does seem more like… a reasonable compromise for our situations.

Hmm… (nodding)… (rubbing my arms, rubbing my shoulders) I want you to feel safe.

Well… downstairs… there is a yoga studio… it is owned by a Taiwanese friend.

Oh! (Perked up a bit) A yoga studio owned by a Taiwanese friend…! (You’re finally bringing up something else about Taiwan voluntarily!) Have you gone to do some yoga there?

Yes. Sometimes. But not all the time. These days, not much. Probably not even once in 2024… but I was almost a teacher there.

Why didn’t you become a teacher at that studio?

I’m too lazy. Am I really going to get up and go to class every week to teach YOGA?! No! It just SOUNDS LIKE a good idea, but the reality of it for me, no.

(Chuckling) I knew it. Is it a nice studio? Owned by the Taiwanese friend?

Yes. It’s very nice. It’s very… “luxurious” kind of feeling. Luxurious but also modern. It suits the vibe. The whole vibe of that apartment complex, the surroundings. I do think it’ll be nice to live in those luxury apartments and come downstairs every once in a while to join my friend at her yoga classes.

And what about if we have kids? (Smiling, big grin)

If we have kids… we could probably move to a house, in that area… and they can go and learn tennis.
