Wow… what a night of talking ONLY ABOUT JAY CHOU?!?!?!
🤭🤭🤭💕💕💕 Lollll…
What else do you remember about his music?
Hmmmm… I remember, when some Taiwanese friends got their first cars… and we’d be driving around. BLASTING Jay Chou in the cars, SUPER LOUD?!?!?!
Why……?
It was like 10 pm at night?! Those sorts of drives…
WTH were y’all doing driving in Australia at those hours blasting Jay Chou outta ur first cars?!
I dunno! 🤷♀️ It was the late-90s, early 2000s, what else was there to do?!
😅😅😅
I’m honestly not sure when was even the first time that I had heard of him…
But he was very prevalent during karaoke 🎤 🎶
Uhuh…
I don’t think… your older brother was always there…
He wasn’t?
No, because I had other Taiwanese friends in Melbourne too. They didn’t mingle with our mutual friends… they definitely had their own karaoke sessions that I was also invited to…
Right. Y’all had ur “exclusive Taiwanese club”… 🙄
Lol… it was called the TAIWANESE STUDENTS ASSOCIATION?!?!!
What?! There was a real club?!
Yes?! 😅 it still exists?! Lol…
What else happened with that club?
They had their balls…
What balls?
TSA Ball…
Uhuh…… (chuckling)…
I didn’t hook up with anyone from those balls…
Well THAT’S A RELIEF…
Lol… 🤭💕
What else happened at those balls? They played Jay Chou?
I can’t remember anything about the music at those balls… I remember some dudes started a fight about politics. Then a few of us slowly backed away from the situation…
Politics?
They were drunk, they started shouting nonsense… 🙄
(Shaking his head…)
These were like, 18, 19 year olds?
Uhuh…
Jay Chou would sometimes be played at the Cantonese restaurants in Melbourne too…
Oh? I didn’t notice… 😒
I’m just gonna ignore that…
I feel like I can’t really explain the fun of driving around listening to Jay Chou. I feel like I don’t know how else to explain this in words.
Why 😅???
It was just… it’s such a youthful nostalgia…
He was really a big part of the non-English-speaking part of my life?!?!?!
Does that make sense?
I feel like… there’s 2 of u…
There’s the English speaking Nicole, who I know…
And then there’s this whole other Mandarin speaking, Jay Chou singing Taiwanese Nicole, that I rarely get to know, let alone experience…
Well?! That’s not gonna change unless you learn Mandarin?!
I kinda feel the same way about you?!?
I can’t fully grasp who you are… in your language?
Not even with subtitles?!
Umm… it’s not the same… 😅
Your Mandarin/Chinese wasn’t even that good when we first met?
No. It improved a lot in my 20s… I was way more immersed in mixing and mingling with other Taiwanese people…
So much so you forgot about everyone else?!?!??!?!
😅😅😅 Maybe…?
I guess there were more than a few… well-meaning… “matchmaker” Aunties, and even friends….
Matchmakers… 😒…
Yeah? (Awkward face…)
How many matchmakers?
You’re LUCKY that my MOTHER gave up on the VIOLINIST!
VIOLINIST 🎻?!?!??!
Who TF?!?!? You always do this! You always just bring up random people that you’ve never mentioned before in any other context and ESPECIALLY you’ve never, ever talked about on social media!!!
😅😅😅
Okay, my love…
So there was a Taiwanese guy who played violin 🎻…
Uhuh, I’ve gathered that much…
And he lived in Europe. I don’t know what country. Maybe Germany or something.
German-Taiwanese violinist?!
Maybe. Let’s say yes for the fictional blog. And then, well, the Aunty wanted to set me up with him.
I hadn’t even seen his photo but he had seen mine.
He was interested to meet up when we were both in Taiwan.
The only reason it got stopped was because MY MOTHER DIDN’T TELL ME SHE HAD SHARED MY PHOTO AROUND TO THE TAIWANESE AUNTIES!!!
And I was just in a mood!
She was asking me, “Do you want to come out to coffee with me and Aunty? And there might be a new friend for you to meet?”
And I was like, “No!!!” I just couldn’t be bothered!
She was like, “When do you expect to be married?!”
And I just threw a whole hissy fit, like “Never!!!! Leave me alone!!!”
And she just gave up! She had to apologise profusely to the other Aunty!!!
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Okay that makes me feel so much better…
