His friend made the joke. HE didn’t make the joke! If he had just asked sincerely, “do u wanna have a coffee with me after your work shift?” I would’ve said yes. And he could’ve just apologised for the friend’s joke at the coffee!
And I would’ve said, “normally I wouldn’t mind that joke, it’s just not appropriate for me in a work setting!”
