I was telling you because I was born a girl — when my brother was born, everyone was fighting to name him, and they had fights about his name! But when I was born, nobody fought over naming me. My mother named me herself because nobody else cared what my name was going to be.

In the most direct and simple English translation, my Chinese name means “Dawn”…
Dawn sounds very simple in English.
Yeah… but my Chinese characters are not simple. My mother managed to think of Chinese characters that represent like Dawn over the mountains in the early morning with a slight breeze — imagine those Chinese ancient history dramas where they’re in the mountains and it’s Dawn… my name kinda gives that feeling…

I’m not sure!!! Maybe because my Chinese name feels special to me, too? Maybe not many people had even cared to ask? I don’t talk about my Chinese name that much.
In Australia, everyone simply accepts and prefers my English name as Nicole.
When I meet new Taiwanese friends or acquaintances, they’re not that curious. It’s usually just a simple compliment, “That’s a beautiful name!” “Thank you, my mother came up with that name” — and then they sing her praises.
You’re kind of the only person who’s ever cared about my Chinese name… like genuinely curious and cared…
