You’re not allowed to quit.
I’m not?
No… you’re allowed to resign — you’re allowed to give notice. If that’s what you really want, I’m your wife. I support you. If that’s what you really want.
But you’re not allowed to quit and give people less than 24 hours’ notice. You’re not allowed to do that to your staff, your team — your fans. You’re not allowed to do that. It’s too much of a shock to everybody’s system. You’re not allowed to do that and it’s actually kind of childish —
You see it as childish?
Yes! At your grown age?!?! To just QUIT?!?!?!
(Shaking head) No babe… you’re not allowed to quit.
You can resign — whatever is the minimum notice in your contract. What is it?!?!
I think my contract says I can give them 24 hours…
ARE YOU SERIOUS?!?!! YOU WORKED THAT IN THERE?!?!?!
(Smirks & giggles)… This time around… I specifically spelled it out for them. It could happen any day, any time…
I don’t think that’s even legal?! I don’t think it would be legal in Australia?!
It wouldn’t be?!!?
I have no idea. I’m just surprised — I’m literally writing fiction right now. It’d be hella surprising if that was permissible in real life.
Okay…? Well… why do you see it as childish?
It’s like a temper tantrum. In 24 hours?!?!!? You might just need a good night’s sleep. You might even feel really embarrassed if you’ve had the good night’s sleep, woken up the next morning and realised, “Oh yeah actually I didn’t mean to quit” — it’s too abrupt. It’s too rash. It’s too sudden.
Hmm… but usually… by the time it gets to that notice — I’ve already been brewing on it for a long, long time…
Yeah but OTHER PEOPLE deserve to MENTALLY and LOGISTICALLY BRACE THEMSELVES for your DEPARTURE.
It’s THEIR human rights.
Have you thought about it like that?!?!
Honestly, no…?
You haven’t been on the other end when a co-worker suddenly quits? Without any reasons?
No… not really….. not like in the context that you’re implying…
I don’t think it’s good karma. I think you’re causing more negative ripples into the Universe when you do that.
So what is the minimum notice period, in your mind?
I’ve given minimum 2 weeks notice. I’ve also had — minimum 6 months — termination of contract notice…
The 6 months wasn’t fun. But I lived through it. It’s not impossible. You’re still an adult. It’s just 6 months. You still get PAID — you still have money flowing into your bank account. You can’t grumble and moan THAT much — you’re still getting PAID to SHOW UP.
And there’s moments — actually when I was interacting with others — I didn’t feel it. It was only if I was left alone, in my own office — that feeling, “Fuck I wanna get out of here…” that’s when it hits the worst. But then, knowing that the notice was already given — then it was like, “The end is… arriving soon…” It’ll happen. The official notice period was officially instated… you get HR starting to organise all this other paperwork — and there is a LOT of paperwork so you don’t turn around and try to sue them.
So you just go through the motions. Show up. Smile. It’s alright — clock off. Relax. Another day. Keep going. Just like that…
It’ll end soon… but not within 24 hours…
