You like Pink Martini? You just added them to your list?
(Nodding) I just suddenly remembered them…
And Stacey Kent, too?
Yeah — I can’t remember how I discovered them… but it was definitely during Melbourne Uni years… I think… another friend introduced them to me… and I don’t know how I had the files in my iTunes — I DEFINITELY REMEMBER they were in my iTunes… way back then…
(Shrugs shoulders)
I really have this like, core memory — studying in my dorm room — playing these songs over, and over, and over again… like I was actually doing homework, I was actually doing the assigned reading and writing my essays — with these songs in the background…
(Nodding) (Smiling)
I don’t ever stray from these versions of these songs. They’re like, cemented into my brain as the “classics” — according to me.
(Small chuckles)… What else do you remember about your dorm room?
Well… I had a wardrobe… made out of wood… and… other students who lived in that room before me — they always carved their initials on a small part of the wardrobe door, on the inside… I don’t know if ANYONE ELSE’S rooms had this as well? I just noticed it in mine…
Did you carve your initials in yours?
(Nodding) I think so… I think I just followed that tradition…
(Chuckles) How long were you in that dorm room for?
Only about a year… then I moved on to another room…
What was the other room like?
The other room was one of my favourites — in terms of college accommodation — I was on the fifth floor. I had night time city sky views of Melbourne… you know, with all the city lights…
Oh?
Yes… and I used to like just turning off the big light on the ceiling, and keeping a warm lamp light on, in that room… so it was like, night time city skyline views, with a warm lamp light… not sure if it was that good for my eyesight, but I really loved the atmosphere I created for myself in that tiny space…
How tiny of a space?
I don’t know, maybe like… 5 x 5 metres? Just a normal dorm room, it wasn’t much. You could only fit a single bed, a study desk, a wardrobe… that’s about it…
But you had window night-time Melbourne city skyline views… It wasn’t exactly “jail” —
Yeah. Because it was on the fifth floor. Because it was before — I don’t even know what Melbourne is like now, but I’m assuming — before some other apartments and buildings went up by now… maybe that view is even blocked… in 2025?
(Shrugs shoulders) But the fifth floor felt good?
At that time it felt good… these days, of course I wouldn’t mind even higher.
You want an apartment higher than the fifth floor?
(Shrugs shoulders)… maybe even a Penthouse? At the top of the building?
(Smiles) You want a PENTHOUSE…
(Giggles) — Is that asking for too much?
(Shaking his head, smiling)… You could never ask me for too much…
Really?! Can you AFFORD a luxury Penthouse?! Even with what you’re making?!?!?!
(Smiling) (Chuckles)… Well I mean… I might have to put it on a 20-year MORTGAGE…
(Chuckles) (Biting her lower lip)…
I’d do it for you. I’ll take on that mortgage. Anything — for you.
(Kiss kiss kiss kiss kiss……………….)
