You really like that performance? By Bon Jovi?
Yes… I’m re-watching the documentary today…
I’m watching it too! We’re watching it together…
Yeah… that performance… I think it’s the most romantic performance in the history of modern music.
WHAT?!?!?!?!!?!?!? That is a HUGE accolade to give them…
Yeah…
Have you seen the actual performance?! Of the entire song?
Yes. It’s on YouTube. Have you heard the lyrics?!
Yes… I know the song… I guess I didn’t pay it that much attention…
And I will love you, baby, always
And I’ll be there forever and a day, always
I’ll be there ’til the stars don’t shine
‘Til the heavens burst and the words don’t rhyme
And I know when I die, you’ll be on my mind
And I’ll love you, always
That’s your favourite part?
Yes…
But you always said that we might not be together forever in the next lives, you always said that you can’t promise forever…
Okay?! But in a song?! It’s SO ROMANTIC!!! (Chuckling)
(Hugging her tight) Why do you do this?!?!!?
Do what?!?!?!
You just DENY your own feelings!!! Clearly — you love the concept of loving me FOREVER…
(Chuckling) I don’t know what you’re talking about…
You really think this is the most romantic performance?! Everything I just did this weekend, 10/10 it doesn’t even mean anything or compared to this guy!? This performance?!
I wouldn’t say that it doesn’t mean anything. I think the documentary is interesting because it’s a look back at many decades of a musical career. And I’m sure that every concert they ever had, there were many 10/10’s… but looking at the entire career — and even comparing to other musical performances by other artists… for me, personally — this one really hits… this one tugs at my heartstrings.
YOUR HEARTSTRINGS?!?!?!!? I thought “I” was the only person who ever made your heart burst!
You are!!! But this song — this performance — it’s just awesome…
Oh?! Awesome?!?!! You think I still haven’t written you as romantic of a song?!
No… I didn’t say that… you’ve definitely already written me “our” song… but… that’s private… I don’t think our song needs to be a big stadium song. I think in terms of big, stadium performances of a romantic gesture — Always — so far, is the bar.
You think I still haven’t hit that bar?
Well… I don’t fully see it yet… I’m wondering if you’re going to get there at the Olympics one day.
Olympics?! You think so?!
I have no idea — and which country?! Exactly?! I don’t know…
Oh — you think it might not be in Australia?
I have no idea… what if it’s an Olympics performance in Korea? I don’t know… (shrugs shoulders)…
But Australia has the Olympics coming up, it’ll be 2032…
Yeah — but you’re not an Australian icon right now. It doesn’t make any sense. It’s a weird Vision… I have no idea what that’s about… I’m not going to tell you to stop performing with your bros just to end up at the Olympics in Australia in 2032 — it doesn’t make any sense.
You literally typed that out in another post…
Okay but I didn’t mean it like that. I mean like… you have that potential, but I don’t mean you need to aim for that literally.
Right… okay… so… I’m still… I just want to verify this in writing — you think that — Bon Jovi — Always — Wembley — 1995 performance — is even more romantic than any Taylor Swift Eras Tour performance?! That’s what you’re saying when you say “in the history of modern music” or whatever you just said?!?!?!
(Nodding) Yes… I can’t actually think of a “romantic” song by Taylor Swift right now.
WHAT?!?!?!?! You’ve listed so many of her songs already on the “100 Love Songs” page on this blog!
Okay — yes — but for it touch me in the same ways… it doesn’t. It’s really enjoyable love songs. But it hasn’t touched my heart like that. The only 2nd place to “Always” by Bon Jovi is “Better Together” by Jack Johnson. 3rd place is your song that you recently wrote for me.
(Eyes — absolute shock) I’m… 3rd place…?
In this context, yes. In other contexts, no, of course not!
No but you’re saying your ranking is: 1) Bon Jovi, 2) Jack Johnson, 3) Me?
Hmmm… yeah… maybe… are you offended?
I’m not sure… shouldn’t I feel offended?
I don’t think so… even though you’re a millennial you’re still far younger than those other two… They’re “Greats” in my ranking because of age and length spans of career. You’re not there yet, babe… you’re still a little toddler in music… you’re not there yet… and that’s not a bad thing! It’s good to take your time before you get too successful, too fast — it could be really overwhelming if it was all rushed…
Do you think… I should go solo?
No.
No???
Not at all… I think you’re better with a group. I think they keep you accountable to show up to rehearsals.
(Chuckles) Yeah… probably…
You need to belong to a group, or even a two-person team… I don’t know if that’s happening though, I still see you as part of the group. But why the Olympics!? I have no idea…
But you see me at the Olympics on stage by myself?
Kind of… yeah… and I don’t know why I have that Vision… maybe… maybe you have another song to share at the Olympics, but it is a Solo song — I don’t know why though — maybe you just haven’t written that song yet? 2032 is still so far away…
It’s not that far, it’s like… 7 years to go?
Right, but like — you would have to get picked probably 2 years before that? Probably by 2030?
So I have 5 years to manifest this.
Maybe?!?! It’s so weird having this conversation like this in this format!!!
Do you think… Bon Jovi was good looking when he was younger?
(LOLOLOLOLOL) Why did you just ask me that?!
Well you’re getting awkward about the Olympics conversation so I just wanted a diversion — let’s not keep talking about the Olympics which is still so far away, let’s get back to the Bon Jovi conversation…
Okay?! So you mean Jon — do I think Jon of Bon Jovi was that good looking when he was young?
Yeah. The 1995 version. Do you think he was hot?!?!?!
(LOLOLOLOLOL) No…. it’s not about that in that performance that is impressing me. I mean, sure, he has beautiful blue eyes, I’ll give him that. But no — that’s not the reason at all.
Hmmmph… okay… well… did you think any of the guys were good looking? When they were young?!
Honestly, probably Richie in that band — when he was younger — fairly good looking dude, sure…
(LOLOLOLOL) RICHIE?!!?!? You thought RICHIE — the younger one — was good looking?!?!?!?!!?
Why not?!?!!? Oh my gosh — why is this a thing?!
NEITHER OF THEM — Jon or Richie — look anything like me!!!
(LOLOLOLOLOLOL) So what?!?! Other guys are allowed to EXIST. And be GOOD LOOKING. That doesn’t mean anything!!!!
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAH…
Yeah… oh well…
What else did you like about the documentary?
Well — I cried, this time around, re-watching it, when it got to the parts about his wife, his family… when his babies were born… that really moved me this time, watching those parts of the documentary thinking about us…
Yeah… I like his charity work… I liked those scenes…
Yeah. It’s quite moving.
Do you think I’m also going to need vocal cord surgery in my future?
I hope not…
I am also kind of worried about this…
Well — maybe there are other professionals you can talk to about preventative measures? This is beyond my education or qualifications.
I didn’t even think much about a post-concert warm-down… I feel like I’ve learned something else — really important! — from watching this documentary.
Are you serious?! You guys don’t warm DOWN after your concerts?!?!?!
Not really… we’re just getting by because we’re still young…
Yeah… I guess that makes sense… you don’t think about that stuff when you’re still young and lively…
Right… yeah… I think it’s starting to creep in, though… this is how I’m feeling in my 30s…
Yeah. Me too — not with singing but just my whole body in general…
(Nodding)
So… just talk to the professionals who would know more about prevention and maintenance… and yes, warm-downs…
I’m worried that… I’ve had too much alcohol, even though I’m cleaning up now…
No — I don’t think it’s affected you to that extent. You wouldn’t even be able to perform if that was the case. It hasn’t affected you that severely. At least, not your vocal cords…
I was really shook in that scene — when you see Jon now saying, “I regret that key change…” — it was an iconic performance! He was young! He flowed with the music — the key change was ICONIC… but now?! He can’t replicate it?!?! Even after the surgery?!!?!
Well… it doesn’t seem to bother other artists, can’t they just use a backing track?
It’s not the same… I don’t think I want to rely on backing tracks…
But for prevention? For better care of your vocal cords?
I still don’t think so…
What if it was — backing tracks for TV performances but not live performances? Would that work?
I don’t know, I’ll have to discuss with everyone else.
In my very basic opinion… it’s not worth the strain… it won’t have that longevity if you all over-strain and overwork and burn out.
I’m still thinking about how you’ve titled this post “Always” and you’re saying it’s the MOST ROMANTIC PERFORMANCE IN THE HISTORY OF MODERN MUSIC — I need to watch it, I’ll be over-analysing it. I can’t believe you said that! You’ve TYPED. IT. OUT.
Yeah… It’s better than any American Super Bowl performances that I’ve seen as well…
WHAT!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
Do you know what I think the “secret sauce” is — in that performance? (I’ve just re-watched the YouTube remastered HD version again)…
What is their secret sauce?
I actually cried just re-watching it again…
Really? It’s still that moving?
Yes… and… I think that the secret sauce is… he misses her… genuinely… and instead of crying about it he harnessed that energy and poured it all into the song… you can feel it. You can feel it in the musical sound vibrations. You can feel his SOUL longing FOR HER. It’s a song FOR HER… and even though I’m not a “delulu fan” — even though I’m not even, a dedicated fan? Or even that knowledgeable of a fan — when I hear that song, I can hear it in his performance. It’s love. He misses her. He poured his SOUL into THAT song. THAT performance. Because of how much he was missing her… You can feel it in that performance. It’s the best performance so far. Ever. (In my opinion).
So his heart had to bleed to give such a good performance…
I don’t think it was necessary. We don’t even know — was she there at that stadium? Maybe he just saw her five minutes before going on stage and he STILL misses her?! She’s his slippery Jewel… that you can feel is TRUE…
