Should I try to monetise the Podcast?
Well… ultimately, yes. But I don’t think that should be the focus for the first few seasons? I think it’s your self-funded passion project. It could last one season, ten seasons, twenty seasons… Maybe you need to set up your own podcast production company? Even if it only breaks even in the first few seasons. You’ll need an accountant to help you keep track.
I actually thought you would say, “Oh no, it’s just a hobby! Make it a non-profit, donate any proceeds to a charity!”
Well… I think your current cashflow is mainly from your bros. Your association with your bros. Once the contract ends with the bros, the cashflow stops as well. Even your brand deals, they’re all bros-adjacent. They’re not loving you for “you” — they’re loving you for the characters you play when you’re with your bros… It’s not a bad image… but it’s not completely you… It’s definitely not AUTHENTIC you…
I think you can be more authentically you, behind a microphone, on a Podcast. Oddly enough — I’m sure many other straight guys thought the same things about themselves and decided to buy a podcast mic and start this for themselves, too! (Laughing) But for you — especially — I can see how you have more than enough musical expertise to share. So much more than what people could even fathom. So your podcast is already valuable, it’s already got content that will intrigue, and build a following. You’ll build up subscribers, for sure.
In the first few seasons, I don’t think the focus needs to be on monetisation, just building up subscribers or followers.
Also, in the previous post I said, “Just finish the first season when you’re ready to come see me” — but I thought about it a bit more. Maybe — just maybe — you flesh it out while you’re away from me, but then you actually DO IT (recordings) when you’re here. In Australia. You can find a studio. Or you build your own, if you’ve already bought a house or an apartment here. But it’s something else for you to do while I’m at work or in class. I don’t know if you need to even have guests on this podcast show… or an occasional one, it’s not always an interview style…
(Feeling very curious now) (Smiling)
Listen to Trevor Noah’s podcast… I can kind of see you going in a similar direction… Sometimes it’s just him, sometimes he has guests… I think he’s being quite authentic there, too. For people who used to love seeing him on Daily Show — it’s like, “Oh yeah, this is Trevor…” It’s not the Daily Show Trevor — he WAS a character. We can see it. Well, I can, when I listen to or watch his podcast… And even the way he talks to his guests, you can tell they’re genuine friends. It feels like a self-funded passion project. He didn’t “need” to do it. But it’s there. It’s like an outlet. Maybe it is for each celebrity’s own mental health as well?! I don’t know, I’m just making assumptions… An outlet, for your own voice.
I can imagine… us in a house or an apartment in the future… I’m like, “I gotta start my corporate cybersecurity girlie work day from home!” I’m going into “my” office — and then you’re like, “Okay baby, I’m going into my studio, doing my podcasting…” — And we meet each other on our lunch breaks. At home.
(Smiling) (Really enjoying this vision)
Yes, yes, we can have lunch and a quickie. And then we meet again for dinner. And more sex. Yes!!!
(Giggling so much to himself, loving this!!!)
The other thing with monetisation is — where is this production company being set up? Will it be an Australian business? If you’re recording the podcast from a studio from home in Australia… I don’t know how to work out all those kinds of details on this blog. But it’s just some business factors to also think about.
(Nodding) I have other people I can talk to about that stuff. I don’t need you to figure that out.
Okay?! (Shrugs shoulders) So… do you want to show your face with this Podcast?
(Shaking his head) If I’m doing a self-funded passion project — I literally can’t be bothered showing my face.
(Laughing) Not even the authentic PUSTULAR ACNE Nude Face you?!?!?!?!
(Laughing more) (Shaking his head) It’s not happening.
I know, right… HAHAHAHAHA….
So then, we could be at home, you’re Nude Face… I could even just come curl up on your lap while you’re recording… I’ll be quiet like a cat!
(Smiling… smitten) (Giddy)
Do you want to Podcast in Korean or English?
Hmm… That’s a GOOD question… (Really thinking about this)… I kind of… if it’s meant to be “authentic” me… I kind of, can’t be bothered… with English?
(Smiling) That’s okay.
Yeah… maybe I’ll just do it in Korean… even if the Podcast is being recorded from Australia… I might just do it in Korean… (Realising something) (Smiling)… Then I can just talk about YOU without you understanding a word of it!!!
(Laughing) Fine. Whatever. I don’t care…
Really?!
Really. Yeah. I mean — as long as you’re not saying anything that’ll come back to BITE US FOR WHATEVER REASON?!?!?! Or my cousins?!?!
(Chuckling) Yeah no, it won’t be anything like that… I am… more than MEDIA TRAINED by NOW…
Yes! Exactly. I know you are. (Smiling)
I’m gonna talk about you… without naming you. I’m gonna talk about love. I’m gonna go on the Podcast and be like “This is what happened today with MY WIFE!” And I’m gonna just let it all out. I’ll talk and talk and talk and TALK!!! OH MY GOD IT’S GONNA FEEL SO GOOD TO FINALLY BE ABLE TO TALK… ABOUT YOU!!!!!!!! ABOUT US!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
(Laughing) Okay? What about music, though? I feel like — there’s already a hundred — more than a hundred — random straight dude podcasts talking about their wives or girlfriends… where does music fit into this?
Hmm… you’re right… what do you suggest?
I think something similar to the Apple guy — What’s his name?!?! I forgot… Zane Lowe?!
People are gonna think your blog is sponsored by Apple.
I know right?! I don’t even mean to keep mentioning them!!! I’m just a Millennial woman that is so deeply entrenched in their eco system because of iTunes!!! (LOL)
(Laughing) Zane Lowe… I like his podcasts.
Yes! Me too!!! And… I don’t know how, but you’re gonna do it. You’re gonna do like a hybrid of Zane Lowe + Trevor Noah + a bit of your own twist and… in Korean… about love… about marriage? Relationships? Whatever you wanna talk about… and then, an OCCASIONAL guest… whoever they may be…
Incognito, though…
Yes. You can do it all incognito. You don’t need to show your face on a Podcast. Graphics team, though. That’s who you’re gonna need to pay. And… maybe some Admin person… sort out all those little details… answering emails…
(Alright, cogwheels are turning…) Should the Admin person be a guy or girl?
I don’t care?! You’re my HUSBAND… I trust you… but why not a “they” — ? Give them a chance? Or whoever, I don’t know… (shrugs shoulders) I don’t really want to dictate those kinds of decisions.
