Our first-born daughter’s name is gonna be “Seven” —
(Laughing) Like the Seinfeld episode?! You want to name our daughter Seven?!
There was a Seinfeld episode about naming your daughter Seven?! No, that’s not my reason. I just came up with that all on my own! Which Seinfeld episode?!
There was a Seinfeld episode… I think it was George… and his fiancΓ©… named their daughter or wanted to name their daughter Seven? And then, because they didn’t have a daughter yet, they were telling people and other people kept taking the name?! The joke was that if you tell people about the name you want for your imaginary kids, other people are going to take it anyway?! (Chuckles)
Okay… that’s good random info… ugh, NO… that’s not the reason I want to name our daughter Seven. Don’t you remember?!
What? Remember what?
Seven. We danced at Seven. Night Club. In Melbourne.
The one that Paris Hilton was at?! Seven Night Club?! I remember I used to go there all the time with the mutual friends. I’m not sure if I have a distinct memory of dancing with you at that night club…
You’re lying. You’re trying to act modest for the blog. You remember.
Um… excuse me?! I mean… I could be WRONG… these are VERY VAGUE MEMORIES… but sure, maybe… maybe we were there… once upon a time?
Once upon a time. We were there. Together. With some friends. A whole group of us. At Seven Night Club. In Melbourne. It was called Seven back then. Not sure what it’s called now.
Yes, and I was just dancing with the girls… I was dancing with the girls, then I got tapped on the shoulder. Someone put a phone in my face. The phone had text on the screen “I LIKE YOU” — My eyes read it, it followed the hand, then the arm, to the face of the person holding the phone. I thought about it, but then I shook my head. And I kept dancing with the girls.
And then…?
And then, I don’t know. Who kept pouring me drinks?! Isn’t that a bit dangerous of a story to tell?!
Were you that drunk, though?
I was in the girls’ bathroom. I had an Angel and a Devil on my shoulders…
Angel: Don’t do it. Don’t do it. Don’t do it. Just because he texted “I LIKE YOU” on his phone, it doesn’t mean ANYTHING.
Devil: Oh come on! Just have FUN! DO IT!!! HAVE FUN!!! COME ON!!! WE’RE ALL STILL YOUNG! DO THIS BEFORE YOU GO OUT INTO THE REAL WORLD. LIKE FOR REALS. WE’RE JUST UNI STUDENTS. GO HAVE FUN! WE’RE ALL OVER 18! IT DOESN’T MATTER!!!
Angel: But it DOES matter. People TALK. People GOSSIP. You could RUIN both of your REPUTATIONS!!!
Devil: What reputations?! Who the fuck do their parents know in Melbourne?! This is SO NORMAL for Melbourne shenanigans! Asian parents turn a blind eye. JUST DO IT! HAVE FUN! And what’s the big deal?! Just dance?! You don’t have to sleep with him, you don’t even have to kiss him. Do you want to DANCE with him?! Just have fun! Just start off with a dance! See if there’s a real vibe there!
Me: Just dance? Just dance and see if there’s a vibe? What if I dance with him and there’s a vibe and I fall for him and he has to leave the country soon anyway because he’s not here for very long and then I’m completely shattered and heartbroken because I will miss him too much, because if I do this then I’m a goner. I’m not gonna… I don’t know what I’m gonna do with myself.
Angel: Everyone needs to DRINK WATER. Here! HAVE SOME MORE WATER!!! STOP. GIVING EACH OTHER. ALCHOL! JUST STOP!!! WE NEED TO CALL A TAXI. LET’S GET YOU HOME!!!
Devil: No water! DRINK MORE! Get more COURAGE!!! Just DO IT!!!
And then what happened?
I drank more water. I didn’t want more alcohol. I drank more water, and then I marched right on over there, you were my only goal. I grabbed you, to dance, with me. I wanted it to be my choice. Because “girls aren’t allowed to chase” — back then — even though it was early 2000s but amongst Asian cultures it was still very much frowned upon — I wanted to dance. Music was pumping. Fun night out with friends. I wanted to DANCE.
Dancing in the moonlight
Everybody’s feeling warm and bright
It’s such a fine and natural sight
Everybody’s dancing in the moonlightWe get in almost every night
And when that moon is big and bright
It’s a supernatural delight
Everybody’s dancing in the moonlightDancing in the moonlight
Everybody’s feeling warm and bright
It’s such a fine and natural sight
Everybody’s dancing in the moonlight
