Hobbies

What’s your hobbies now, dear?

Well, I’m gonna publicly continue to say whatever I’ve been saying for my characters. And there’s still truth to it. Like maybe 30% of my time now, instead of the majority of my hobby time. And the other 70% of hobby time, well — first of all, song writing is not hobby time. That’s still work time — so the other free time, other than gym or catching up with some trusted friends — I think I want to be reading up on politics. Maybe not specifically Taiwanese politics, but politics in general. Just to get a general understanding, and then apply that knowledge later on as I learn more about Taiwanese politics.

I know it’s not necessary. But I’m at a point in my life now — my industry — I’m at the top of this mountain. I can be here on cruise control. So, I’m curious to learn other things. Other more meaningful things. Politics is something — it never occurred to me until now. You’ve been my catalyst, my muse — yet again! And still, I am on a search for me. I want to read more, learn more about it — for me.

As someone with such a public platform, I don’t want journalists to ask me stupid “gotcha” questions about politics. I want to read up more on it myself, watch documentaries, interviews on various channels that are legitimate sources of reliable information. It’s kind of a “serious millennial man” type of thing to do, I guess… but yeah, I’m feeling it. I can’t just be a little boy that knows nothing.

Do you think you’ll want to like, enrol in an online course or anything like that?

Nah. It’s not necessary. What do I need with that piece of paper?! I don’t need it. But I wouldn’t mind perusing — just lurking on those websites.

There’s different subscription tiers. You can easily just “peruse” without handing in any assignments, interacting with tutors or other classmates on their message forums. Just do the “peruse only” subscription option. Whatever that is. I might not even be using the right word. But you get what I mean.

I do…

Well that’s something to look forward to.

It is?

Yes! When we catch up in real life, I want to hear all about it. What have you been learning? What have you been doing during hobby time? Of course, I want to hear about work too — as much as you’re permitted to tell me. And I just want to know, what’s been happening? If you can’t express it in any other way. If it’s just… things to hold onto, keep to ourselves until we meet again, in real life, next…

I think reading up on politics, political science — that’s healthy. It’s good for your knowledge. And maybe even global media… that’ll be interesting. Good perspective. Have that boarder perspective of how these machines work. They have their functions. We’re just the little cogwheels.

What texts do you recommend on global media?

I don’t know… but whatever is balanced in opinions. Stick with more politically neutral texts. Don’t veer too far into either extremes. Just get a boarder understanding of both sides… that’s what I meant.
