“I don’t go out but I’ll do it for you” — he really put in effort. Even if, he’s being stubborn. He’s being lazy, or grumpy, or feeling whatever mood. He’ll still force himself to just get on with it — for her. For the woman he loves. He won’t let her down. He’ll force himself to be better, even if, in his mind, he’s doing it tough. He doesn’t normally go out — but he’ll do it for her. Even flying across the world, if he has to.
“You never liked it when I drink too much” — I relate to this. I don’t like it when people drink too much. And with you, especially, I don’t like it. I’d rather not see it. Not be a part of it when it happens. It scares me, a little bit… it does.
“I hate to dance, but I’ll dance with you” — Self-Perception that he is often acting like a little clown, like a bit of a fool, but he’s doing it for his woman. She’s worth it. She’s worth those efforts. Every footstep. Every choreo. He’s doing it for her. And with her. Metaphorically, and literally. There’s a dance in their dynamic. They have little fights, they make up, they keep sharing knowledge and information, and exchange ideas. Learning and growing with each other. Also, physically, literally, dancing. It’s FUN when it’s with her. He gets to touch her (okay, the next lyric…)
“Cause I’d do anything to feel your touch” — That’s one of their love languages — physical touch. It’s a way of expressing his love. Because it is his love language — he wouldn’t use it against her. He wouldn’t lay a finger on her if he was mad, upset, or frustrated. He’d do anything to receive her touch. Not to poke her. Not to invade her space. But to receive her touch. Her love. He’s waiting for her to send the signals, to let him know that he is welcome.
“Don’t like anybody, tell me why it’s different with you” — He’s a grumpy grump who doesn’t ever truly trust any other humans. He’s really, really sceptical of them and their intentions. It’s not like it’s impossible. It is an exaggeration — he has friends — but overall, as a whole, she’s the only one who stands out. She’s the only one where it matters the most. The most. Not that he doesn’t have other friends. He does. He’ll go out with them, too. Relaxing — to whatever extent he is capable — and he can let them know, “I have my woman to go home to.” That’s all he wants, is to brag about her, be proud of her, show her off. Because she’s so special in his eyes. She is his jewel.
“Don’t believe in love, but no one makes me feel like you do” — He’s never had his heart melted by anyone. Ever. She’s the only exception to this rule. Nobody ever did. Nobody ever will. And even though there’s ups and downs, just like all relationships, she’s worth it. She’s worth the downs. She’s worth every depressing day. She’s worth every bit of “bad luck” the world throws his way. She’s his only reason for facing the world, as bravely as he does. If she wasn’t in his life, he’d just be lazy, unmotivated, not doing much.
Also, there is a feeling… it becomes hard to describe, even in song — or perhaps it is the entirety of the song — that feeling.
“I don’t say it much, ’cause I just always thought that you knew, I” — Here’s where he got it wrong. He assumed. And he’s sorry. He’s writing this song. He’s trying to tell her. Here it is. Here is my love. If you need to hear it, hear this song. Listen to it, every day. It’s right here. Everything I’ve been trying to explain.
“It’s what you do to me” — because, she needed to believe it. She needed proof. She wanted some way of knowing, because she didn’t fully trust herself and her own mind, her own neuroticism, her own paranoia, her own claustrophobia. Here is the effects of you. Here is the symptom, the result, the consequences. The logic.
“I’m wrapped around your finger and I can’t stop” — it’s something endearing… reminds her, sometimes, of her father. And she was a little girl who had Daddy wrapped around her finger. Now he knows, how it feels to fall. How it feels to give that kind of love. In a romantic way. Not a paternal way. It makes sense to them.
“You know I got a soft spot for you” — because she said it. She said she has a soft spot in her heart for him. Always. And he saw it with his own eyes. He saw the tears well up. He knew in that moment. It is true.
“You know I got a soft spot for you” — emphasis. Continuing previous explanation. For all the shenanigans, all the silly tricks and playful mind games, it doesn’t matter, at the end of the day. The bottom line — the matter of fact — the love is there.
“Baby, can’t you see?” — It’s not a rhetorical question. He’s genuinely wondering. Has she opened her eyes, this time? Can she see it the same way that he does, this time? Because they’re older. Their frontal lobes are now developed. He sees things differently. Doesn’t she see it, too? (He has a little hesitation, he’s genuinely wondering. This song is part of him asking her — please, clarify this for me).
“I need you, ’cause you’re everything that I’m not” — This is very true. They are Yin and Yang. Masculine and Feminine energies. Intertwined. Interchanging. Like a dance.
“You know I got a soft spot for you” — He’s being so gentle. She wanted gentle. She needed gentle. She didn’t want to get hurt. She’s been hurt before by others. She needed comfort. She needed stability.
“You know I got a soft spot for you” — Emphasis. Here’s your stability. I’ll say it again, and again, and again. Always. As much as you need it. It’s never too much to repeat.
“Too late” — He’s a goner. He fell for her already. Nobody else understands this fact. Nobody else sees it this way. Nobody else or their opinions matter.
“Don’t wanna fall, baby, I just” — Even his mind, sometimes, knows this might not be a good idea. It’s not like he’s an obsessive maniac who doesn’t have realistic hesitations, or maturity, weighing the positives and negatives of this connection. This is a real emotion. It brings up insecurities, it brings up jealousy, it brings up these different sides to him that he normally keeps very well buried. Nobody triggers him — nobody else is allowed to.
“Don’t need somebody else to throw me aside” — He’s so used to rejection, he’s numbed by it. It’s not surprising when she rejects him. It’s always surprising when she wants him back. It was incredibly surprising when he saw the tears in her eyes. It was so out of the blue. She was in “work mode” she didn’t need to let that guard down at all. Who the hell was he?! Why did she just… she couldn’t control it? It was that strong? She broke character… for him?
“But I’m up all night” — Still wondering. Little old me? She broke character, for me? Me with all my flaws. Me with all my insecurities. ME, after all these YEARS?! (Also, he barely sleeps… like, in general. He does sleep, but not much… not like most people…)
“Thinkin’ ’bout how it can be you to change my heart, but I” — Nobody knows where he’s really from. Only her. Well, factually, other people do know. But it feels like, she is one of the rare ones that didn’t have to know, and he let her know. She has this effect on him, where sometimes — he couldn’t predict it. She releases knots in his heart that were caused by others. She releases the tension that caused the defensive guards that were conditioned within him; the mistrust of others, the scepticism, the pessimism, the jadedness.
“It can be you” — he’s giving permission to himself. He’s seeing something else in their future — it’s possible.
“For you” — Please, love me. Marry me. Be my wife. My partner. My other half.
“For you” — I know it seemed rushed the first time. I’m not rushing now. Take your time. But remember, it’s always for you.
“For you” — Always listen to this song, because it is how I feel. Wherever I am in the world, whatever else I’m doing. It’s for you.
