Supervisor, “Okay, so you want to do this research… on trans people…”
Me, “Yes.”
Supervisor, “But you’re not trans…?”
Me, “No. But I have a friend who is. And I wanted to do this research for them.”
Supervisor, “Okay but like the optics of that… because you’re not a part of that community? What is it again? Like LGBTQWERSABCDEFG!?!?!”
Me, “No. But I’m an ally. I see myself as an ally.”
Supervisor, “Okay, cool. Yeah, that’s nice. But like… how many people in the Australian population would need this?”
Me, “It’s not a big percentage but it doesn’t mean it’s not needed. Globally, as well, not just the Australian population.”
…
I’m still angry, I can’t continue this train of thought.
Fortunately, it has been taken on. By others, who do identify themselves within the community, and they are doing the academic work on it.
I was also a little taken aback. Have we gotten so politically correct that because I personally am not “identified” as one of the community that I am not allowed to contribute to the research?
Every time my friend asks me questions. I wish I had the literature to back up what I’m hypothesizing. I wish I could look up a specific text. I wish I could go verify some facts. I always have to give a disclaimer, “This is… what it might be… but… there’s not enough research.” I can’t back up any facts. I can’t back up any statistics. There’s nothing.
It’s bare bones. The research is almost nothing.
Get your A.I. technology. It’s like half a page summary. Two sentences. There’s nothing.
