I haven’t cooked — like, using pots and pans and a stove — for probably over a year now, at least. I basically air fry almost everything. And/or microwave. And sometimes steam. Sometimes I use a sandwich press…
It’s not my kitchen. It’s my mother’s kitchen.
When I was in that corporate job, when I had my clean and minimalist IKEA showroom style apartment, yes, it was a joy to be in my own kitchen and do my own cooking. It was also a lovely mental break from the corporate job.
But these days… air fryer is the most convenient and energy efficient. Energy for me, maybe not technically energy for the house? I’m not sure.
When I’ve done 20,000 steps from a full day in retail, air fryer is a good friend to have.
I do also use a pressure cooker sometimes, in winter.
Other than that, I also buy salads from Coles or Costco… a little bit of fresh fruit…
Instant noodles… my mother is adamant that you have to rinse the noodles. Like, you firstly boil the water with the noodles and then you throw that water away. Because that is the shitty water. Toxic water. (Not a doctor! Just anecdotal). And then you add the seasoning and new clean and warm water.
So many Tik Toks of people making instant noodles and drinking soup from that first batch of water… ew.
…
Mum always tries to add more to instant noodles. “Add some veggies!” Don’t just eat noodles, flavouring and water.
I would add egg except I don’t buy eggs.
Weird? Maybe…
I don’t buy eggs. I let other people buy eggs, but I don’t buy eggs.
I would order a dish with egg in it if I’m eating out with friends.
But I just don’t buy any eggs for myself.
When Mum is here, she buys lots of eggs.
I don’t buy eggs.
Probably since… one time… I had a carton that took me a while to get through… and then when I cracked one open, it looked like an embryo was growing in it… so… I don’t know for sure if it was? But it looked like it, and I felt really bad…
So I just generally don’t buy eggs for myself. Since that time…
I don’t know if this will change.
Perhaps, if I had a family to feed, sure, maybe out of necessity. Maybe if I knew we were definitely going to get through the carton within a week or so.
But also… the thought of that is making me cringe.
I don’t really want eggs. It’s like, I’m not Vegan at all — I’ll eat chicken and seafood! But I don’t want eggs. But I’m happy to eat it at a restaurant or café. Okay, it’s weird, but it’s me!
And it’s not about “healthy, cage free, organic eggs” — obviously, because I don’t know where the eggs are from when I’m at a restaurant or café.
If MOTHER has instructed me to go on a grocery adventure and help her buy some eggs, then, yes — it is cage free, it is antibiotic free, and organic eggs. It’s like, the most expensive eggs in Australia… LOL
But when she’s not here, I just don’t buy eggs at all.
When she’s here, she has plenty of traditional Taiwanese recipes for eggs.
Mainly she does a Taiwanese salted egg… we do also love Taiwanese tea eggs, but we don’t make them that often.
I do… like… the “century egg”… but Mum hates it. “Oh, that smells so bad!” She can’t stand it. So we don’t end up eating it that much. I like it. With a bit of tofu, rice porridge… childhood comfort food…
I don’t know why she fed it to me in my childhood but now she’s not able to stand the smell of it. Or was it my Aunties and Grandmother who fed it to me more often?! I don’t even know. It’s possible they influenced my palette more, because Mum herself doesn’t like century eggs.
We don’t know how to make Korean or Japanese eggs.
I’ve seen many Tik Toks. I’ve never tried it.
It’s just like, “Okay, that’s nice… I’ll eat it at the restaurant” LOL… I’ve never felt motivated to try and make it myself at home.
There’s no capacity to retain recipes from other cultures because I barely know the recipes of my own heritage!
Salty egg and bitter melon is good. Oh… I love it. With rice porridge.
There is a lot of bitter melon in my father’s heritage… if you can’t take bitter melon, you’re not a mature person. You have not “tasted” the “bitterness” of life. We are raised with this palette. It builds taste buds of steel.
Same with Traditional Chinese herbal medicines… it’s like drinking dirt. And if you can’t take it, you’re too weak. (LOL!!!)
